Retail services slowly return to normal

Retailers at the Ratchaprasong intersection, including Siam Paragon, Gaysorn and Amarin Plaza, are rushing to reopen their doors after being closed for nearly two months by the red-shirt protests.

However, Big C Supercenter will remain closed indefinitely because of the extensive fire damage resulting from the rioting last week, while it could be at least six months before CentralWorld sees shoppers again.

Central Chidlom and MBK reopened yesterday while Siam Paragon, Siam Center and Siam Discovery will open for normal services today.

Gaysorn and Amarin Plaza plan soft openings on June 1 while over 100 Gaysorn retailers will be fully open June 4.

Satima Tanabe, deputy general manager of Gaysorn Land Asset Management, the operator of Gaysorn, said the company lost at least 10 million baht in potential sales a day, in addition to massive opportunity losses.

"At least 10 international fashion brands that were planning to expand their businesses to Asia including Thailand have already shifted their destinations to other Asian countries such as Malaysia and Vietnam," Mrs Satima said.

Gaysorn expects to allocate 10 million baht for a plan to revive the sentiment of its Thai and foreign customers. It will collaborate with the Ratchaprasong Square Trade Association (RSTA) on the "We love Ratchaprasong" campaign as well as its own "Bliss is Back@Gaysorn" promotion with a focus on creating a fresh and cheerful mood.

In order to stimulate customer spending, the centre will collaborate with its 100 tenants for a "Gaysorn End of Season Sale", offering discounts of 30-70%. It also created a customised "Luxury Welcome Package" with privileges for guests staying in hotels in Ratchaprasong.

Meanwhile, CentralWorld tenants who also have shops at Gaysorn will be allowed to sell products from the closed mall at Gaysorn as long as they fit the overall concept of the centre. As well, Urban Space, a promotional and event hall next door to Gaysorn, which is expected to open early next month, could be made available for some tenants to sell products temporarily.

Witsarut Srisurin, Gaysorn's technical manager, said it was also planning to add more security staff and hardware.

The company expects local customers will be its main visitors for a few months.
